A remarkable account of life on the Canadian prairies in the 1920s, ‘30s and 40s. The author, Nell Charlwood, was born in Vermilion, Alberta, in 1919 to a Canadian farmer father and an Australian nurse mother. Her recollections of early life are vivid and descriptive – they show us a pioneering life long gone, when travelling in winter was full of danger; growing, storing and cooking food were vital tasks; and where school days and life’s simple pleasures were the focus of this family on a remote farm. Nell wrote these wonderful recollections for her Australian grandchildren to help them understand the life she’d lived as a child and young woman.
