Guide to Native Orchids of Victoria by Gary N. Backhouse

The most comprehensive guide to the wild orchids of Victoria ever produced. It describes all 447 species of wild orchids found in the state, one of the richest regions in the world for temperate ground orchids, including 66 distinctive species that have not yet been formally described.

Victoria's orchids range from the minute Mallacoota Midge Orchid, with flowers just 2 mm across, to the King Orchid, whose largest plants carry hundreds of fragrant flowers. Brief descriptions of every species help with identification in the field, and more than 460 photographs show the orchids in their natural habitat, including some species never illustrated before.

The author, Gary Backhouse, worked in biodiversity conservation with the Victorian Government and has photographed more than 5000 orchid species in the wild. He also wrote the companion Guide to Native Orchids of NSW and ACT.
