The Founding Voyage in the Words of Those Who Made It

This hardback brings together two of the earliest eyewitness records of British settlement in Australia: the accounts of Captain Arthur Phillip, commander of the First Fleet and first Governor of New South Wales, and marine officer Watkin Tench. Together they follow the fleet from its departure in England, through the long passage to Botany Bay, to the landing of 1788 and the difficult first months at Port Jackson.

Written while events were still unfolding, the journals record the practical business of founding a colony, the shortages and hardships of the early settlement, and the first meetings between the newcomers and Aboriginal people. They read as both a voyage narrative and a primary historical source.

  • Accounts by Arthur Phillip and Watkin Tench
  • Covers the voyage, the 1788 landing and early Port Jackson
  • Hardback, approximately 400 pages
