Sitting as a bulwark between China and Russia, Mongolia only re-emerged as an independent state in relatively recent history after centuries of Russian dominance, and this now sixth edition map reflects ongoing improvements to place name accuracy as the country has continued to develop. Ulaanbaatar, the country's only city of real significance, is now generally accepted as a single word rather than two, a detail earlier editions worked through as conventions settled.

Printed double sided at 1:1,800,000, the map splits the country roughly east and west, with a generous overlap between the two sides, and uses bold altitude colouring to bring out the topography, including graphics for swamps, glaciers, sand dunes and water wells. Roads across Mongolia vary dramatically in quality, so the thinner red lines marked are best treated as general guides rather than formal, made roads. National parks and other protected areas are highlighted, including sections of the vast Gobi Desert incorporated into border zone reserves along the Chinese frontier, alongside partially paved and unpaved routes, border crossings, petrol stations and driving distances on main and local roads. Railway lines, domestic airports, and internal provincial boundaries are also shown.

A detailed inset of central Ulaanbaatar rounds out the map, annotated with hotels and points of interest. Available in both standard paper and a laminated, write on finish for travellers wanting extra durability, this remains one of the more thorough English language references available for navigating one of the world's more remote and adventurous travel destinations.
