Kel Watkins was born in 1950 and raised on a wheat and sheep farm north of Mukinbudin. He always felt that his life followed a seven-year cycle. In broad terms there were seven years of pre-school on the farm, seven of Primary School at Mukinbudin and seven at Guildford Grammar School in Perth.
The first working cycle was as a motor mechanic in Kojonup, Perth and Muka. This was followed by his favourite period. Kel was one of the country's first full-time professional
storytellers. This led to travelling the world and performing regularly in America, Canada, Europe and the Far East. During this time he made two live concert recordings and authored three books.
The last period was of 28 years with a family-owned freight forwarding business, sending airfreight to Christmas Island and the Cocos Keeling Islands. There had always been some pressure to write his stories but Kel found they did not translate to the written word.
The difference between the written and spoken word was a bridge too far. Thanks to retirement, time, and modern technology in the form of a speech-to-text application he has been able to put his stories down, as spoken.
