The Story of the First Woman to Reach the Summit of Everest
This picture book biography follows Junko Tabei from a curious, hiking obsessed child in Japan to the woman who, in 1975, became the first woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest. It describes how she founded a women's mountaineering club after facing exclusion from mixed climbing groups, and touches on her later work in environmental advocacy and mountain conservation.
Illustrator Yuko Shimizu's artwork, made with India ink and digital colour, moves between dramatic mountain scenery and gentler, folktale inspired images of community and support.
Aimed at primary school aged readers, the book includes an author's note, timeline, glossary and bibliography, making it a useful introduction to Tabei's life for young readers and the adults sharing it with them.
