February Newsletter

News from The Chart & Map Shop

Howdy all,

When I sent out the last newsletter, some guy replied and told me he'd sue me if I sent him any more emails. I was a little taken aback, so I checked, and he'd received his order in a very timely fashion late last year. A matter of days! No reason to have been angry at the shop, he just genuinely hated the newsletter. Enraged by it, he was! So yeah, hopefully I've done a better job this time round.
Ultimate Dive Sites
Scuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuba. I don't know why I wrote that, it's just what I was saying in my head and I thought why not? Off to a solid start. This is a brand new addition to the very excellent series of ultimate stuff. Written by all-round underwater expert Todd Thimios, this detailed guide offers insightful tips and essential information you'll need when visiting these, some of the world's best dive sites.

Todd has spent a lifetime diving and photographing all over the world and has curated this list from a wealth of experience. From manta rays in the Maldives to orcas in the Arctic, crocs in Cuba or even anacondas in Brazil, there's loads of the wet stuff out there and it's completely chock full of interesting things!

Todd was kind enough to write a guest post for our blog which includes some excerpts from the book, which you can have a little lookie at here.

Fire II Fork
Following on from the huge success of his first book, Fire to Fork, Harry Fisher is back with a new one filled with even more delicious recipes you can easily cook over fire. Harry's whole philosophy is that camp cooking doesn't need to be crap. It can be more than damper and stews. It's not that complicated to make tasty num nums on your campfire, and Harry wants to show you how!

The photography is great, and the recipes are honestly mouth-watering, there's not a dull page in here. From Hung Chicken to Bang Bang Shrimp, I want to put all of it in my face immediately. There are no crazy ingredients, it's all done with regular stuff you probably already have with you. Take one camping next time and treat yourself to dinner that doesn't suck!

You can see Harry in action on YouTube or Instagram if that toots your horn - @firetofork.

Insectopia
I love this book so much. I think it's meant for kids, but I have thoroughly enjoyed it and, while I may regularly act like one (so I'm told), I am far from being a child. It's well written and the illustrations are fantastic, and it's big too. I haven't measured it, but think A3-ish.

You (or, you know, a child) will learn all sorts of cool stuff about insects - complex rituals of courtship, tender care for offspring, organisation of insect states, wars over food sources and all sorts of fascinating insect features, as well as the importance of insects to humankind and all life on our planet, how insects are found everywhere, how they play a crucial role in all sorts of things! It's a big, beautiful book full of beautiful, interesting things.

Around the World in 80 Plants
I have a problem with plants. I have a frankly embarrassing number of plants in and around my house. I have trouble leaving the house without inadvertently returning with more plants. I also quite enjoy books about plants, and I particularly like this one!

Jonathan Drori takes you on a trip across the globe, bringing to life the science of plants by revealing how their worlds are intricately entwined with our own history, culture and folklore. Some have a troubling past, while others have ignited human creativity or enabled whole civilizations to flourish! This beautiful book is a delight to read and the spectacular illustrations make for a real treat for the eyeballs.
